FAQs
ON ACCREDITATION OF OUR MEDICAL LABORATORIES IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ISO 15189 STANDARD
What does ISO mean?
ISO isn’t exactly an acronym. It was chosen by the International Organisation for Standardisation from the Greek word “ΙΣΟΣ” (isos) meaning “equal”. The story goes it was chosen to ensure there would be no differences in how the organisation’s three names would be rendered in its three official languages: English, French and Russian.
What is the International Organisation for Standardisation?
The organisation now known as ISO was set up in 1926 and is a global federation of national standardisation bodies from more than 160 countries. One standardisation body from each country represents the ISO at national level. For Greece that body is the Hellenic Organisation for Standardisation (ELOT).

ISO's mission is to promote standardisation to facilitate the international exchange of products and services and to develop cooperation in intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activities. Its work results in international agreements published as international standards.
What is a “standard”?
It is a document that sets out requirements, specifications, and guidelines or features that can be used systematically and in a way that ensures that materials, products, processes and services are suitable for the intended use. ISO standards ensure that products and services are safe, reliable and of quality. Standards are strategic tools that help reduce costs by increasing productivity and minimising waste and errors. They are used by governments and industry to facilitate trade, to establish a technical basis for regulation and to protect consumers.
What is International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC)?
ILAC is an international collaboration between laboratory accreditation bodies which was set up around 30 years ago. More than 40 lab accreditation bodies have signed a document known as the ILAC Arrangement which significantly bolsters data acceptance across the territories of the signatory countries. Greece is represented in ILAC by the Hellenic National Accreditation System (ESYD).
